The Squirrel vs. The Nut

Here at ASI, Joe Haley is known for lots of things, least of all his ability to keep his opinions to himself.

Not only is he a managing editor at ASI and the dapper star of The Joe Show, but he’s also one of the most outspoken personalities of the weekly ASI Radio Show. So outspoken, in fact, he’s got his very own segment each week — Joe’s Rant — dedicated especially to those things in life that simply stick in Joe’s craw. (And there’s certainly no lack of ‘em, that’s for sure.)

From Larry “The Perv” King and Al “Global Warming” Gore, to inconsiderate airline passengers and rude drivers who don’t use signals, nothing is sacred to Joe and he’ll rant about anything.

Including squirrels.

If you missed this week’s segment, you missed Joe throwing down the gauntlet and declaring war against the squirrels of his neighborhood because, as he says, not only are they destroying his property, but they’re now apparently taunting him by eating his tomatoes and dodging his traps.

Listen to the segment here.

This story has become so well known at ASI that there’s even a running count as to who’s winning the war. Latest count: Squirrels 4, Joe 0.

Also, one of our designers (Steve Hawk!) decided to take a few moments to create an image of Joe vs. the Squirrel or, as it’s become known internally, The Squirrel vs. The Nut. Enjoy!

ASI Exclusive! Chelsea Clinton’s Wedding Bag

This just in!

ASI has obtained one of the bags given to hotel guests of Chelsea Clinton’s wedding this past weekend. Here’s what it looks like:

Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Bag

In addition to being one sweet-looking bag, the contents are what really astounds me. Presented with an “S” theme, the items all fall under a category that begins with the letter S. The following are some of the categories including the item that went with it:

  • Sip: Wine
  • Snack: Pretzels
  • Scribble: Note paper
  • Sweet: Cookies
  • Shop: A reusable shopping bag
  • Savor: Fresh peaches

Pretty cool, huh? Whaddya think? Post comments below!

Hot Trend - The Asia Effect

Asia EffectWhat do you get when you combine striking workers, rising wages, decreasing factory output and shrinking labor pools in the “world’s workshop,” China?

Depleted supplier inventories, longer lead times and higher prices, of course. So much so that Counselor magazine has designated this confluence of unusual and unprecedented problems, or “The Asia Effect,” as its Hot Trends for 2010.

Counselor Editor Michele Bell does a great job of capturing the magnitude and breadth of the situation and how it might affect industry distributors.

Want to learn more? Then read on by clicking here!

And since this is such a hot industry trend, we’ve set up a poll question for our users to gauge just how much this issue might be affecting them. So take the poll now!

Chinstrap - An ASICentral Local Celebrity!

Last year, I wrote about ASICentral’s very own Steve “Chinstrap” Hawk and how close he came to winning the vaunted annual “Philly Beer Geek” contest, losing by a hair of his chinny, chin-chin to Nate “Nugget Nate” Gefvert. In a battle that saw Steve get down on one knee and propose to his favorite beer — in this case, his fiancee and good sport, Crystal, dressed as a beer – Steve was dynamite that night, and we all thought he was robbed.

Fast forward one year …

With the bitter, skunky taste of 2009’s loss lingering in his mouth like an Old Milwaukee Light, Steve-O not only dusted himself off but raised the bar to a level that would make even the staunchest of beer connoisseurs and historians proud. By riding into the competition on a motorized beer cooler and composing a hilariously clever and inventive campaign speech hailing his nomination for Philly Pale Ale for mayor, “The Human Growler” — as he’s known in beer circles – not only blew away the competition, he tore a hole in it and tapped it! And we’re proud to say that today we here in ASICentral have a true local celebrity in our midst.

Ladies and gentleman, congrats to this year’s Philly Beer Geek, Steve Hawk!

Interactive Feature: Celebrity Match Game

Sure, everyone knows that Reese Witherspoon is an Academy Award-winning actress, but did you know she also champions and raises funds for several causes, including domestic abuse?

Since this month’s Advantages’ cover story focuses on fabulous fundraisers, we thought it might be fun to create an interactive Web feature that gives you, our users, the chance to test how well you know your celebs. Presenting our Advantagesmag.com interactive feature of the month: Celebrity Match Game.

Our drag-and-drop feature allows you to match eight causes with eight celebrities — if you get it right, the box will turn green; if you get it right, it’ll turn red. If you get it wrong, keep dragging the cause from celebrity to celebrity until you get it right!

Dress Me Up! The Sales Rep Interactive Feature

Last month, Advantages’  Editor and fellow Jerseyan Kathy “K-Hu” Huston suggested a fun and interactive online feature for an April story about first impressions. “Let’s play dress up the sales rep!” Kathy exclaimed in her usually buoyant way, and I was immediately intrigued. She had in mind the appropriate and inappropriate ways a sales rep should dress, but wanted to know if we — the Online Masters of the ASI Universe — could create a feature that allowed for dragging-and-dropping different pieces of apparel on scantily-clad male and female models.

Kathy, I said, we can do anything your little heart desires, and so was born the great Dress Up The Sales Rep Interactive feature!

Kudos to team member Craig for the design and functionality. Enjoy!
